Lisbon rewards tired legs. The city is built across a handful of steep hills, and the old Tram 28 route is the classic way to see them without the climb — though I ended up walking most of it anyway, ducking into whichever alley looked interesting.
Better than every other custard tart I tried the rest of the trip. And I tried a lot of custard tarts.
Belém was the one proper day trip: the monastery, the tower, and the original Pastéis de Belém bakery, where the custard tarts are still warm.
The original bakery, mid-morning queue already out the door — worth every minute of the wait.
Sunset from the Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, with the whole city and the river turning gold, was the highlight of a short trip that felt a lot longer in the best way.
