Chasing the Northern Lights in Reykjavik

· 4 days
SoloNature

Iceland in January is dark, windy, and absolutely worth it. Most of the daylight hours went to driving the south coast — black sand beaches, waterfalls you can walk behind, glacier lagoons full of drifting ice.

Most of the evenings went to standing in a car park somewhere dark, willing the sky to do something. It finally delivered on the last night.

Aurora over the car park

No warning, just a faint green smear that slowly turned into full curtains of light directly overhead. Worth every freezing hour that came before it.

The Blue Lagoon was exactly as touristy as everyone says, and I regret nothing about going anyway.
